{"id":8513,"date":"2025-12-01T13:01:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T18:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pathfinder.org\/?post_type=essay&#038;p=8513"},"modified":"2025-12-03T13:56:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T18:56:10","slug":"kano-health-workforce-mentorship","status":"publish","type":"essay","link":"https:\/\/www.pathfinder.org\/impact-stories\/kano-health-workforce-mentorship\/","title":{"rendered":"From Training to Transformation: How Kano\u2019s\u00a0Health Workforce  Mentorship\u00a0Program is Saving Lives\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Health workforce shortages plague&nbsp;Kano&nbsp;state\u2019s&nbsp;health system&nbsp;in Nigeria, where&nbsp;for every&nbsp;10,000 people, there are only 3 health workers&nbsp;available to provide care.&nbsp;This critical workforce gap puts immense strain on frontline staff, especially the&nbsp;<strong>Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs)<\/strong>&nbsp;at rural primary health centers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost to&nbsp;mothers and children&nbsp;is especially devastating:&nbsp;1,049&nbsp;women die of pregnancy-related complications for every&nbsp;100,000 live births&nbsp;and&nbsp;103&nbsp;infants die among every 1,000 who are born.&nbsp;The need to deliver quality care, particularly for maternal and newborn health, is urgent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To&nbsp;better redistribute essential health service delivery tasks among available health worker cadres,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pathfinder.org\/publications\/tsts-progress-snapshot\/\">Kano state adopted a&nbsp;<strong>Task-Shifting Task-Sharing (TSTS)<\/strong>&nbsp;policy.<\/a><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-textgreen-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8dd6d1d94e95d8145a1dbd1e9b4352ba\"><strong>Addressing a critical health workforce gap&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pathfinder International\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/impact-catalysts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Impact Catalysts,<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0collaboration with government partners, took this policy from paper to practice through the\u00a0<strong>TSTS\u00a0Project<\/strong>\u00a0in Kano.\u00a0The program equipped\u00a0<strong>145 health care workers<\/strong>\u00a0across\u00a0<strong>26\u00a0Local Government Areas (LGAs)<\/strong>\u00a0with hands-on training in core\u00a0primary\u00a0health\u00a0care competencies,\u00a0from maternal and newborn health to family planning, immunization, and data use.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mentorship played&nbsp;a central role.&nbsp;Clinical mentors and&nbsp;LGA&nbsp;Monitoring and&nbsp;Evaluation Officers&nbsp;provide&nbsp;on-the-job guidance, helping providers apply their skills with confidence and use data to improve service quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-2-xl-font-size\"><em><em>\u201c<\/em>Before this training, newborn resuscitation used to scare me. After the mentorship, I feel confident and ready. Just last month, I successfully resuscitated a newborn, and that moment reminded me why these skills matter<\/em>.<em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/em><br><em>\u2014CHEW, Kano State<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial results from this practical, supportive model are promising. Without mentorship, such a day might have overwhelmed the team.&nbsp;Thanks to the mentorship-led guidance of&nbsp;Hafsat Yusuf, a TSTS mentor, all nine deliveries,&nbsp;including the twin birth,&nbsp;were successfully managed&nbsp;<strong>without complications, postpartum hemorrhage, or neonatal deaths<\/strong>.&nbsp;The team&nbsp;demonstrated&nbsp;remarkable&nbsp;skills&nbsp;in&nbsp;labor&nbsp;monitoring, safe delivery, and immediate newborn care. Babies were immunized promptly, and mothers received essential postnatal attention within hours of delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"has-2-xl-font-size\"><em>\u201cI was struggling with partograph filling, but my mentor\u2019s guidance improved my skills. I can now track&nbsp;labor&nbsp;progress accurately and make informed decisions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><br><em>\u2014<em>CHEW,&nbsp;Bebeji&nbsp;LGA<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-textgreen-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-79b9e43e5478d204527d09c63de37b13\"><strong>Learning and impact&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rahama experience illustrates the power of&nbsp;<strong>mentorship as a catalyst for transformation<\/strong>. It&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;that when healthcare workers are supported to learn, apply, and lead, the outcomes are immediate and lasting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-2-xl-font-size\"><em>\u201cThe mentorship has empowered me to take charge of my facility. I can now provide quality ANC, delivery, and postnatal care to my patients.\u201d<\/em><br><em>\u2014<em>CHEW,&nbsp;Shanono&nbsp;LGA<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kano TSTS model\u2019s success can be traced to three core principles:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-textgreen-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a4628590db6c3ea126149ef482736fab\"><strong>Mentorship matters.&nbsp;<\/strong>Continuous, hands-on guidance bridges the gap between training and real-world practice.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-textgreen-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-703ac0571c2de7b946ee64fba38eee57\"><strong>Data drives improvement.<\/strong>&nbsp;Facilities that track performance are more responsive to community needs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-textgreen-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4e83c8982840e557fdb7396596607d9e\"><strong>Confidence saves lives.<\/strong>&nbsp;Empowered providers deliver safer, more compassionate care.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-2-xl-font-size\"><em>\u201cThe TSTS&nbsp;training&nbsp;has been&nbsp;a game-changer&nbsp;for our healthcare system.
