{"id":725,"date":"2022-12-29T15:35:11","date_gmt":"2022-12-29T20:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pathfinder.local\/?post_type=focus-areas&#038;p=725"},"modified":"2025-09-09T10:33:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T14:33:15","slug":"maternal-newborn-and-child-health","status":"publish","type":"focus-areas","link":"https:\/\/www.pathfinder.org\/focus-areas\/health\/maternal-newborn-and-child-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Maternal, Newborn &amp; Child Health\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pathfinder envisions a world where preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths are eliminated and a positive experience of pregnancy and childbirth allows women and children to survive, thrive, and reach their full potential in life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Healthcare practices to prevent or manage complications are well known.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maternal health and newborn health are closely interlinked.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Timely and skilled management of pregnancy and childbirth by professionals can make the difference between life and death for the mother and her baby.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preventing unwanted pregnancies through contraception and comprehensive abortion care can reduce maternal deaths.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Barriers to quality maternal and newborn health services must be identified and addressed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">What We Do<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Pathfinder focuses on eliminating preventable maternal and newborn deaths by making sure women and newborns can access quality care at every stage\u2014before, during, and after her pregnancy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health Systems&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We train providers to provide quality care during pregnancy and childbirth.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We address provider values and bias that may prevent them providing quality services.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We strengthen integrated services such as malaria prevention during pregnancy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community Engagement&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We mobilize communities to prepare for childbirth, identify danger signs in pregnancy and activate transport systems, so women can reach facilities in time to save their lives.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We make sure every woman has access to the information and health care she needs to safely deliver her baby and care for herself and her children.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We link communities with health systems to make sure mothers and babies receive the quality care they need.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enabling Environment&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We advocate for evidence-based policies, funding, and commodity security.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We use social and behavior change approaches to reduce stigma and promote health-seeking behaviors.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We mainstream gender to ensure men can support women during, and after childbirth with financial resources and household decisions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-brand-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-5d2f3a70 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"padding-top:44px;padding-right:44px;padding-bottom:44px;padding-left:44px\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:80%\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-cream-color has-text-color\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\">Every child deserves a healthy start.
